July 27, 2015

Dan McCloskey reclaims the lead in our last weekly update of July, with Michael Orobona and Danton Boller trailing by a point. Pitching battles seem responsible for most lead changes of late: Sale vs Kluber for AL strikeouts, Scherzer vs Kershaw for NL IP.

Johnny Cueto’s departure from the National League dashes the hopes of seven entrants across three pitching categories… However, Cueto will continue to earn HBP tiebreaker points as a Royal, along with any other players switching league residence during the season.

See you next Monday!

Michael Orobona sneaks into first in weekly update #10, edging Dan McCloskey in the HBP column alone. Michael’s Mark Melancon pick for NL saves is the only uniquely held point in the pool at this point, although Dan may soon have a match in the Nats’ Drew Storen.

Our leaders were shuffled around a bit yesterday when Felix Hernández’s no decision in the Bronx was surpassed by Dallas Keuchel’s 13K dismantling of the Rangers in Houston. Chris Sale had a rough start at home against the Royals but still reclaimed his AL strikeouts lead.

See you next Monday…

July 13, 2015 (All-Star break)

Dan McCloskey leads again as we head into the All-Star break… Danton Boller, Garrett Schwab and Michael Orobona sit one point back but top Dan in HBPs. Our incumbent champ got a boost from Chris Sale’s 10K win on Saturday; Corey Kluber was unable to match the feat yesterday.

Can Dan repeat as winner this year and pull off an unprecedented McCloskey family three-peat?! Predictions Pool historians may be skeptical: no All-Star break leader has gone on to win it all since at least 2006. In fact, our last three ASB leaders finished no better than ninth…

We’ll be back with another update next Monday!

July 6, 2015

Dan McCloskey tops our mid-season update with seven points, although the nearest five entrants all have higher HBP counts. Dan built his lead on a combination of Miguel Cabrera’s .350 BA and Chris Sale’s share of the AL strikeouts title. Miggy won’t be competing for the HR or RBI categories from the disabled list, but his AL-leading batting average will remain frozen in time for a while.

King Felix’s days atop the AL wins column may be numbered. The Mariner ace has only won two games since the beginning of June, with stingy co-leader Dallas Keuchel making a start against the Indians tonight. If Hernández comes off the AL W books, Michael Orobona should become our new leader with Jim Kushner in close second.

Next Monday is our All-Star break update…
